Regina Morrison Newman was elected as Trustee in August 2018, and is the first woman elected to hold the position. She previously served as Trustee in 2009 and 2010 having been unanimously appointed by the Shelby County Commission to fill a vacancy in the office due to the death of prior Trustee, Paul Mattila.
Trustee Newman graduated from Rhodes College in 1979 and later attended law school obtaining a Juris Doctorate in 1994. Prior to attending law school, she served the City of Memphis as Assistant Treasurer where she implemented procedures setting new records for delinquent tax collection. She then served the State of Tennessee as Assistant to the Commissioner of Revenue and Personnel Director for the Dept. of Youth Development. Following law school, she was engaged in the private practice of civil law until her first stint as Trustee. While she was Trustee, the office set new records for tax collections and won a national award for financial management. From 2010 through 2015, she served as the Deputy City Attorney for the City of Memphis with duties including liaison to the Trustee’s office. From 2016 to 2018, she practiced law at her firm, Newman Law & Mediation, before again becoming Trustee.
She is a Rule 31 listed civil mediator, and a member of the Tennessee Bar Association, the TN Lawyers Association for Women, and the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law among other legal organizations.
She resides in Midtown with her husband.
